How many times are remodelers given the analogy that building their business is “like building a house?” Too many times if you ask me. I am not going to bore you by comparing pieces of your referral program to parts of a house save the need for a strong foundation. Every business book you and I have ever read stresses the importance of creating a good foundation for your business before you set out. As you plan to grow your business, you will need to begin with a strong foundation if you expect it to hold up over time.
There are four basic pieces of your foundation that you will need to address before moving forward with growing your company:
- Identifying Your Ideal Client
- Creating a Service List
- Setting Your Goals
- Building Your Community (An ongoing activity)
Each of these parts, when they are clear to you, will support all of the other work you do to grow your business. These key factors will guide the decisions you make and help you make better choices as you get further into the planning process.
For today, think about what parts of the foundation you have in place and what will need additional attention.
What steps can you take today to strengthen your foundation?
